UTA’s 52nd Annual Event

On Tuesday, September 30, from 6-8PM, UTA will be holding its 52nd annual event at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 85 Chestnut Avenue in Albany, NY. We will celebrate the achievements over the last fiscal year. For example:

  • UTA distributed $677,699 in emergency rental assistance to support 409 low-income households at risk of, or overcoming, homelessness.
  • Our Court Advocate assisted over 375 tenant households during eviction proceedings, with 85%+ achieving their desired outcome.
  • Assisted 30+ tenants to use upstate NY’s first right of action, helping tenants sue their landlords for repairs, rent abatement, money judgements, shelter and moving expenses, and more.
  • Albany became the first city to adopt Good Cause Eviction, making it the first city to opt in under the strongest rubric possible, followed by another 16+ municipalities.
  • Helped develop the Danker Village Tenants Union, which successfully prevented dozens of multi-hundred dollar rent hikes using Good Cause Eviction.
  • Successfully advocated for the development of affordable housing on Colvin Ave, overcoming significant Neighborhood Association NIMBY-ism.
  • Supported the establishment of the Ida Yarbrough Tenants Union, the first tenant-initiated public housing union in decades.
  • Co-led the successful campaign for the Housing Access Voucher Program, a state-run Section 8 like voucher program for low-income and homeless New Yorkers.
  • Secured $125,000 to support a City of Albany housing initiative.
  • Launched the Capital Region’s first Fair Housing Office.

The event will include a short agenda with community awards and a keynote speech by Miriam Axel-Lute, Editor-in-Chief of Shelterforce Magazine, an appetizer buffet, and free attendance by the community (though we do welcome donations!).
