At United Tenants of Albany (UTA), we believe that safe, stable housing is a human right. Since our founding, we’ve worked to ensure tenants across Albany County are informed, supported, and empowered in their housing journeys.

Walk-In Office Support
Our office is open Monday–Thursday, 10 AM–12 PM and 1 PM–3:30 PM for tenants seeking immediate help. No appointment needed—just come by. We assist over 1,000 walk-in tenants annually with a range of housing concerns. More info.

Emergency Rental Assistance & Housing Counseling
If you’re behind on rent, at risk of eviction, or experiencing homelessness, UTA may be able to help. We work with low-income households to prevent homelessness by providing financial support, referrals to social services, and housing counseling.

Housing Hotline
Facing a tough housing situation? Call our Housing Hotline at 518-436-8997 x3. We provide guidance on your rights, help with landlord issues, and support navigating housing systems. While not a live hotline, our team responds to calls in the order received—typically within a week.

Fair Housing Enforcement
Discrimination has no place in housing. UTA investigates complaints and helps tenants understand and assert their fair housing rights. If you’ve been treated unfairly due to race, income, disability, or another protected status, we can help.

Court Advocacy
Going to eviction court? You don’t have to go alone. Our advocates help tenants understand the court process, explore legal defenses, and negotiate with landlords—providing critical support during a stressful time.

Tenant Advocacy & Organizing
UTA helps renters organize tenant unions and advocate for themselves. Whether you’re facing landlord harassment, unsafe conditions, or looking to build tenant power, we’re here to support your collective efforts.

Community Organizing & Policy Advocacy
We’re committed to systemic change. UTA works with city, state, and national coalitions to fight for stronger tenant protections, more affordable housing, and policies that reflect the needs of our community—from Good Cause Eviction laws to Inclusionary Zoning.
