United Tenants of Albany (UTA) has served the Capital District community for a remarkable 50 years!
The mission of UTA is to protect tenants’ rights for safe, decent and affordable housing, with a special emphasis on those who have the greatest need or who experience the most severe problems. Importantly, UTA also promotes the development and preservation of more affordable housing and works collaboratively to find long term solutions in our community. UTA makes a tremendous, positive impact on our community each year.
In 2022, UTA, while facing many challenges and embracing new opportunities, achieved the following:
- Distributed $392,642.86 in rental assistance to secure housing for 171 households
- Responded to 6,300 housing hotline calls
- UTA’s court advocate assisted more than 100 tenants in court proceedings to prevent eviction
- Reported more than 45 instances of Fair Housing violations
- Assisted more than 24 households living in foreclosed properties to secure stable housing
- Facilitated the development of a tenant association representing 176 units
- Helped design and successfully advocated for the Eviction Prevention and Intervention Collaborative (EPIC) in Albany County We are excited to celebrate the great work of UTA.
We would be honored if you would consider being a member of the Honorary Committee for our upcoming event, the United Tenants of Albany 50th Anniversary Celebration, which will be held on Thursday, September 21, 2023 at 5:30 p.m., at the Albany Labor Temple at 890 3rd Street in Albany. We anticipate approximately 200 attendees and plan to have awards, refreshments, a raffle and free attendance by our community partners and clients. In addition to the Honorary Committee, we will have Sponsors from local businesses which will not only help us cover any costs for the event, but will also help support our programs by providing much needed unrestricted funds. We are planning a short agenda, with acknowledgements and thanks to our sponsors and a presentation of several awards, commemorating our five decades as a key nonprofit organization in this region.
We humbly ask that our Honorary Committee members make a minimum donation of $150 in support of UTA by July 15, 2023. We will list our Honorary Committee on UTA’s website (www.utalbany.org) and in the event Program Journal and provide recognition at the event. You can also send a check if you would prefer. Please feel free to call our Executive Director, Canyon Ryan, at 518-436-8997 x 104 or email us at 50thanniversary@unitedtenantsalbany.org if you have any questions or would like additional information.
Thank you very much for considering our request. We know that with your partnership, United Tenants of Albany can do even more to meet the growing needs of low- and moderate-income tenants in our community and help prevent homelessness. We look forward to continuing to serve the community through our tireless advocacy, organizing, and dedication to improving living conditions for tenants in the Capital Region.
With gratitude, on behalf of the UTA Staff and the Board of Directors,
Thanks!
